ClickBank Affiliate Approval in 2026: Do You Actually Need It?
How signing up really works, what Gravity Score means, and why some products hand you a link instantly while others make you wait.
If you’ve already read about WarriorPlus, JVZoo or Digistore24 approvals, ClickBank works differently in one important way: there’s no platform-level approval to become an affiliate at all. You don’t apply, you don’t wait, and nobody reviews your account before letting you in. What ClickBank does gate, sometimes, is a specific product — and only when that product’s own vendor has switched on manual review.
This guide is based on ClickBank’s own official onboarding help center, so it separates what’s actually required from what people assume is required because other networks work that way.
Step 1: Create your account and pick “Affiliate”
Sign-up is free. During the process ClickBank asks you to confirm your sign-up email in the same browser window before you can edit anything else, so do that on desktop rather than switching to a phone halfway through.
You’ll then be asked to choose an Account Type. For promoting other people’s products, pick Affiliate. If you also plan to sell your own product later, pick Combination instead — you can do both from one account nickname. One detail worth knowing: ClickBank’s own help docs note that creating several separate nicknames can actually work against you, because it spreads your sales thinner and makes it harder to clear the payment requirements described below under any single nickname.
There’s no fee for affiliates here. ClickBank charges sellers a one-time activation charge ($49.95 for a first account, $29.95 for additional ones) when their first product gets approved — that charge doesn’t apply if you’re only signing up to promote, not sell.
Step 2: Finish your Client Profile and payment details
This is the part that’s easy to half-finish and then wonder later why something isn’t working. ClickBank’s onboarding guide is direct about it: an incomplete sign-up won’t succeed. Two pieces matter most:
- Your Client Profile. Add your real address and a tax ID — an EIN or SSN in the US. ClickBank issues 1099 forms to affiliates who earn over $600 USD, so this isn’t optional paperwork, it’s how you actually get paid without a hold-up.
- Payment Information. Set your payment method, payout threshold and payment frequency. Since July 28, 2023, ClickBank no longer defaults new nickname accounts to paper check, so you have to actively choose a method or payment simply won’t go out. The default payout threshold is $100, and you can raise or lower it from this same screen.
Step 3: Browse the Marketplace and understand Gravity Score
Once your account exists, open the Affiliate Marketplace tab from your account sidebar — no waiting period, no review. You can search, browse by category, and filter by language and offer type. Each listing shows sales statistics, and the number most beginners fixate on is Gravity.
ClickBank defines Gravity as a count of how many different affiliates earned a commission promoting that product over the past 90 days, weighted so recent sales count more than older ones. In plain terms: a high Gravity score usually means a product is currently “hot” and converting for a lot of people — but ClickBank’s own documentation also warns that it means more competition promoting it. A lower score isn’t automatically bad; it can just mean fewer people have found the offer yet.
Step 4: Get your HopLink — this is where approval can show up
On any listing, click Get Affiliate Link, enter your account nickname, and click Continue. For most products, that’s the entire process — your encrypted tracking link (called a HopLink) is generated on the spot, and you can pick a landing page or add tracking parameters before copying it.
Some vendors, though, switch on pre-approval for their specific product. If that’s the case, you won’t get a tracking link straight from the listing — ClickBank shows a prompt explaining that approval is needed, and the next step is to contact that seller directly, the same way you’d message a vendor on WarriorPlus or JVZoo. ClickBank doesn’t publish what share of products require this, and it varies product by product rather than being a platform-wide rule.
One small but easy mistake: when you add a custom tracking ID (TID) to monitor where your traffic comes from, ClickBank’s own instructions specifically warn against using a dash (-) in it, since that can break tracking.
Step 5: Getting paid — the part that trips people up
Making a sale and getting paid for it aren’t quite the same moment on ClickBank, and this is the single most common support question new affiliates run into. Before ClickBank issues your first payment, your account has to clear the Customer Distribution Requirement (CDR): at least five sales, made using at least two separate payment methods. ClickBank built this in specifically to discourage accounts that exist mainly to buy a discounted copy of your own promoted product rather than genuinely refer other customers.
Two weeks after your fifth qualifying sale, your account should show the CDR as met. If that 14-day window crosses into the next pay period, your payment goes out on the pay date after the later of the two periods — which can make a payment look “late” when it’s actually just following that rule. If a direct deposit bounces back because of a banking issue, ClickBank falls back to mailing a check instead.
None of this is about being approved as a person. It’s a mechanical requirement tied to the sales themselves, and it applies the same way to every affiliate account.
Should you avoid approval-required products as a beginner?
Not necessarily, but it’s reasonable to start with instant-link products while you’re learning the Marketplace. A product that requires manual vendor approval isn’t automatically better or worse — vendors turn it on for all sorts of reasons, from protecting a high-ticket offer to simply wanting to know who’s promoting it. If you do request approval, a short, specific message naming your site or channel and how you intend to promote the offer (a review post, an email list, a YouTube video) gives the vendor something concrete to say yes to, rather than a blank request they have no reason to approve.
Whatever you promote, check the product’s refund/cancellation signals in the Marketplace listing before committing serious time to it — a high refund rate eats directly into commissions you thought you’d already earned, since a refunded sale typically reverses the payout.
FAQ
Q: Do I need to be approved to become a ClickBank affiliate?
No. Opening an affiliate account is free and instant. Approval, when it exists at all, applies to specific products whose vendor has switched on manual review — not to your account or the platform as a whole.
Q: How do I know if a product needs approval before I click through?
Click “Get Affiliate Link” on the listing. If the product is open to everyone, your tracking link generates immediately. If the vendor requires pre-approval, ClickBank shows a prompt explaining that instead of a link, and you’d contact the seller from there.
Q: Why haven’t I been paid even though I made sales?
The most common reason is the Customer Distribution Requirement — ClickBank won’t release payment until you have at least five sales from two separate payment methods, and there’s roughly a two-week clearing window after the fifth one. Check your account’s CDR status before assuming something is wrong.
Q: Is there a cost to join ClickBank as an affiliate?
No. The one-time activation fee ClickBank charges applies to sellers getting their first product approved, not to affiliates signing up to promote.
Q: What does a high Gravity score actually tell me?
That a lot of different affiliates have recently earned a commission on that product — a sign of current demand, but also a sign you’ll have more competition promoting it than a lower-Gravity offer in the same niche.
